Customize Your Desktop with VLC Video Background | ClipTraining Blog
In our recent “Clip of the Week” we introduced you to the concept of a desktop video background for Windows 7 through Dreamscene Activator. Continuing on this theme, we’d like to show you a couple alternative ways to display a looping video as your background through the VLC Media Player to enjoy a video background. This is a solution that can be used by Windows XP/Vista/7.
Here’s how to do it (assuming you have VLC installed already):
- Within VLC choose the Tools menu and go to Preferences.
- On the left navigation, select Video.
- From the 1st dropdown box, change your output type to DirectX (Directdraw) video output.
- Select the checkbox for Enable Wallpaper Mode.
Tip- On the playback controls, make sure the Loop button is selected so the video will repeat instead of stopping after playing once.
Now your videos will play as a wallpaper background, allowing you to work freely with the video of your choice playing behind you.
As a reminder, if you are running Windows Vista Ultimate you can also go to Windows Update to install the bonus add-on Windows DreamScene. Once installed, you will have the ability to run a looping background by right clicking on a video and from the menu selecting “Set as Desktop Background.”
Whatever method you use, you’ll need to obtain some looping backgrounds in order to enjoy this feature. These can be used with Windows DreamScene, Dreamscene Activator or VLC Media Player.
Need some backgrounds? There are plenty of both free and paid-for animated desktop background sites available. They are easy to find through a quick search. One of the coolest sites for backgrounds is DigitalBlasphemy.com and there is a small (but growing) collection of animated backgrounds you may want to check out while you are searching.
With video wallpapers, your desktop will never be the same. Have fun with this!
