The Admin Corner: Small Business Server 2011

SBS 2011 Standard is here and it is exactly what you would expect it to be if you are already an SBS administrator with legacy flavors of SBS.

If you had SBS 2008 then you will see all the upgrades you were hoping for with SBS 2011. The base operating system for SBS 2011 is Server 2008 R2. Exchange has been upgraded to Exchange 2010 SP1. SharePoint Workspaces is now SharePoint Foundation 2010. Everything is at the next level and it is all quite polished and a pleasure to work with.

What I really appreciate about it is the ability that you have to use simple wizards from the SBS Administration Console to configure some of your more in-depth aspects to a server environment like certifications, smarthosts and more.  One thing I would have liked to see with 2011 is the ability to have more than 75 users.  A few extra users would go a long way toward adoption of SBS if you ask me.  100, 150?  That is still considered a small business in many respects.

This week on InfoWorld, J. Peter Bruzzese gives 5 tips to configuring your SBS server with Exchange 2010 SP1.  To read up on the points, click here:  http://www.infoworld.com/d/microsoft-windows/5-tips-setting-microsoft-small-business-server-126
